review
Who doesn't love a good high-stakes heist through Europe with a sexy man? If there's anything we have learned from James Bond, the Thomas Crowne Affair, the Tourist, et. al, European art heists aren't complete without a good dose of sexual tension.
Peyton Riley is the second book in Mori's Takedown Series. Almost immediately following the first book, our heroine Peyton Riley is forced to work for the shady Gustave after he threatens to have her killed. She finds herself side by side with Carson, the same man who seduced her and put her in this pickle. Together they have to stop the sale of a very important painting in Amsterdam...whether Peyton likes it or not.
This is the third Mori book I've read (One Night at the Palace Hotel and Tame the Kitten), and I love her ability to build worlds out of her back pocket. Everything about this book has been carefully chosen and well-planned, down to the characters' quirks and aliases. There's a certain elegance and class to her writing that brings these glossy, sexy images to mind, and they all come alive with carefully chosen words. She knows her stuff--discussing O'Keefe and one page and taking off characters' clothes with the next. It's brilliant fun, and I can picture the scenes clearly in my mind, complete with montages and chases along the canals of Amsterdam.
My only issue with this book is that it's definitely not a standalone. The second book starts almost immediately after the first ended, and as a new reader, I needed a while to catch up to what happened in the previous book before following Peyton and Carson's story. Plus the ending of this book will definitely leave you wanting more--which isn't such a bad thing!
I definitely recommend this book to fans of heist films, Ocean's Twelve, the Sting and the like. There's enough excitement to keep you turning pages!
