Photo Tour: We Go Together
While I am in the middle of repairing all the photos on my blog (manually repairing it all is the way!), I thought I would serve up this quick little blog post for We Go Together. The story is largely inspired by two things: Much Ado About Nothing and Washington DC. We were there last January just before the great blizzards of 2016 hit (phew!) and while we weren't able to go into the National Gallery again (will no longer be distracted by skating rinks!), here's a quick little photo diary of the places Bea, Ben, Claudia and Hiro walked around in.
Hooray for bookish places!
Old Town, Alexandria
This is one of the few pictures I managed to take of Old Town in Alexandria when we walked around (at -2 degrees!!!). If there was any place in DC I would live in, it would be here! While their history isn't always the nicest (my aunt still calls city hall the Slave Market), it's done a lot to make people fall in love. The small town has twinkle lights on King Street that lead all the way to the river, and the ice cream is fantastic! They have an art center inside an old torpedo factory and a Paper Source, which will get all my money one day.
In the book, this is where Leo opened his cafe here (I can see him baking bread on a street like this??) and where Claudia and Bea live. They could have opened their store here, but could you imagine going up against Paper Source? They could not.
Georgetown, DC
This is an extremely lucky shot that I got of Key Bridge, and Georgetown on the other side. Do you see how idyllic it is! M street is this long road lined with big stores like H&M and Urban Outfitters, but have small boutique shops too. Serenity 3 isn't there anymore (boo), but the Georgetown Bakery is alive and kicking. Their vanilla-based cupcakes are the best!
In the book, this is what I call 'home base', where most of the story happens. Parking may be problematic, but I imagine Hiro has this eagle eye for spotting good places. And Ben loooves Chipotle, so you can see him marching there in a huff every time he lets Bea get on his nerves. Bea likes Chiptole too, but doesn't go there while he's there.
The Library of COngress
Ta-daa! Don't you just love the Library of Congress? It wows me every time I go there. White marble and gold finish really makes me weak in the knees.
In the book, the library is Bea's refuge, the place she runs to when she can't deal with life. Claudia knows she needs her space when she's here, so she doesn't go in, but Ben is way too stubborn for that. Among all of them, Hiro is the only one with a library card and access to the Reading Room, but he never uses it.
The Sulpture Garden, National Mall
A place that wasn't in Sigh No More but added to this book was the Sculpture Garden on the National Mall. When we were there, the fountain was covered over by a skating rink that played summer tunes, which was so cute. We ended up spending a lot of time here, completely forgetting that the National Gallery next door closes at 5pm!
I like to imagine that this is actually Ben's happy place, and Bea just takes it when she really really needs to think. He's hopeless at ice skating, but she likes to watch him flail, so it works out for everybody. Claudia used to be a figure skater as a kid, and Hiro played hockey in high school, so they are quite possibly the most coordinated couple on the rink.
We Go Together is available on Amazon and the Buqo store. Make sure you leave a review on Goodreads too! :)
